CHAPTER 11

Ben spent as much time as he could in the house the next morning. He wanted to catch his mom before heading off to rehearsal, to explain to her that what’d happened was a big mistake, an accident, even. He’d gotten a little carried away with the treatment and then it had just happened.

Alexa stayed in her room, right up until it was time for him to leave. Ben spent another minute chewing on his lip and debating whether or not it would be worth it for him to skip rehearsal in order to apologize to her, and then started walking.

He arrived at the Pinecross Players Theater even later than he had the day before. Luciana was already lecturing the cast. She glared at Ben when he made his way down the aisle toward the front of the auditorium.

“You are almost ten minutes late,” she said, sharply.

“I’m sorry,” said Ben. “I had to... check in on something.”

Luciana’s expression was even sharper than what he’d been expecting when Ben got close enough in to see it in detail. She crossed her arms and looked back over to the group at large. Ben followed her eyes, and after a few seconds, figured it out.

“Hey, where’s Mika?” he asked.

“Absent,” said Luciana. “As far as anyone can tell. Jessie will be stepping in to fill the role of Juliet.”

Ben nodded. Jessie was sitting a few seats down from him, doing a good job of keeping her excitement contained to a polite level. She was wearing a summer dress that took advantage of her voluptuous figure, and for a moment, Ben couldn’t pull his eyes away from her well framed cleavage.

“I’ve set up several different rehearsal stations on stage,” said Luciana. “Today, we will be working on all three acts independently of one another. I’ve divided the cast up so that there will be no overlap in who is needed in each scene.”

Luciana began calling out names and assigning them to various spots on the stage. Ben ended up stage left, where the prop bed sat. Jessie was sent up to the same spot, and he waited for another minute, listening to Luciana read off names, before realizing that it was to be just the two of them.

“I’m ready to do this!” Jessie was beaming, looking like she’d been picked for an award. “This is going to be awesome!”

“Well, I’m glad to see that you’re feeling the part,” said Ben.

Luciana made her way over to their group first once everyone was in place. She frowned slightly at the both of them and then nodded.

“I want you to review the second brothel scene,” said Luciana. “Where Romeo and Juliet meet in Juliet’s private room to… enjoy each other’s company.”

Jessie shot her hand up into the air as soon as Luciana finished.

“How deep into the roles do you want us to get?” she said in a quick, eager voice. “I mean, should we really… kiss and stuff?”

Her face turned a deep shade of crimson, almost matching her long red hair.
